The West is one of the longest-running games published by InnoGames and in April 2026, it turned 18. Over nearly two decades, it has changed massively. And yet, at its core, it’s still unmistakably The West: the same frontier spirit, the same familiar systems, just shaped by different eras of browser gaming. Isn’t it fascinating how much can evolve over time while the heart of a game stays intact?

What it’s like to run an 18-year-old game

Running an 18-year-old live game requires a very different approach than running a new project. The West doesn’t have a large team. We work in a small group that still manages to maintain the game—and continue adding new content.

Every month we ship an update that includes new events, quests, items, and improvements to existing mechanics. The rhythm is familiar to long-time players, but behind the scenes it takes careful planning: we need to keep the game stable, respect its legacy systems, and still find room to evolve.

And with a game this age, “evolve” doesn’t always mean “reinvent.” More often it means improving what’s already there, smoothing rough edges, modernizing where we can, and adding new goals for players without breaking the balance that has been built over years.

Keeping knowledge accessible: the Knowledge Base project

In May 2026 we finalized the first version of a major project: moving the wiki into our Knowledge Base. From now on, players can check items and set bonuses directly in the KB, making it easier to find up-to-date information in one place.

It’s a quality-of-life improvement, but it’s also something that matters a lot for a veteran game: players rely on knowledge, comparisons, and planning. Making information easier to access supports both newcomers and long-time strategists. Give it a try!

What’s special about running The West as a legacy game?

One of the biggest advantages of running a game like The West is the relationship with its community. We have the time and the opportunity to talk with our players and listen to their requests.

Before every event, we ask our beta players to share feedback on new sets. Based on that input, we often make adjustments before content goes live. Does that mean we can accommodate every request? No, and we never will. If one player asks to remove a speed bonus and another asks to double it, we simply can’t make everyone happy at the same time.

But we do try to accommodate as much as possible especially when feedback points to real issues like balance concerns, unclear mechanics, or missing information.

The same goes for our roadmap and longer-term changes. Throughout the year we collect feedback, ideas, and suggestions, and we turn them into a list of potential improvements for the following year. We genuinely appreciate the creativity and dedication of The West players. It’s impressive how much effort the community puts into discussing improvements, testing changes, and helping the game move forward.

Of course, not every idea can be implemented. Some changes take significant time because older systems are tightly connected under the hood. Some can be done quickly. And some no matter how good they sound on paper just don’t fit the game’s design, would disrupt balance, or would require changes that aren’t realistic for a small team.

If you’re a The West player, please keep sharing your ideas on the forum. Who knows—maybe your suggestion will be the next one that makes it into the game.

Looking ahead

At 18 years old, The West is proof that games can have long lives when players care—and when a team keeps showing up to maintain, improve, and support what already exists. We’re proud of how far the game has come, grateful for its community, and excited to keep riding into the next chapter together.
