From personal experience, the first time Scylla wipes your entire team, it stings. You thought your roster was solid. Turns out, solid doesn’t cut it here.
The Scylla Event Dungeon is the centrepiece of The Great Odyssey, and it’s designed to punish one-trick squads. With up to 50 stages, a rotating cast of terrifying Maw abilities, and a boss that literally changes colour as you climb, this is the most strategically demanding content in Heroes of History right now. But once you understand the system, it clicks and that’s exactly what this guide is for.
Forget Your Favourite Team. Seriously.
The biggest mistake players will make is charging into the Scylla Event Dungeon with their go-to squad and expecting to brute-force it. That won’t work here, and the game is designed specifically to stop you from doing it.
Each stage locks certain spawn slots to specific hero classes or unit types. One slot might demand a Defender. Another might only accept a Healer, or a Cavalry unit, or a combination of both. And those requirements? They change every single stage. So the team that got you through Stage 12 might be completely useless at Stage 13.
The bottom line is simple: build a wide roster and keep it upgraded. If you hit a wall, don’t just retry the same squad over and over. Step back, figure out what the stage is actually asking for, and level up the heroes that fit. Every failed attempt costs Siren Shells – your entry currency – so spending them on the wrong team is a painful waste.
Three Waves, Endless Surprises
Here’s what you’re actually walking into: every stage is a three-wave boss fight. Each wave brings a completely fresh arrangement of Scylla’s Maws: Up to five serpent heads at a time, each acting as its own independent enemy with its own HP bar, its own abilities, and its own targeting logic.
And those abilities are no joke. Here’s what Scylla can throw at you:
- Single Strikes: One Maw targets either your closest or your furthest hero for a brutal 350% attack hit. Watch your positioning.
- Area Strikes: A full-team hit landing fast, at just 0.67 seconds wind-up. Pre-shielding with heroes like Pakal the Great or Louis XIV is your best friend here.
- Attack & Defense Buffs: Maws can buff each other. A 25% ATK or DEF boost on a Maw that’s already hurting you is a nightmare. Manipulators like Menelaus or Leif Erikson are invaluable.
- Crit Frenzy: Boosts a Maw’s Crit Chance by 25%. Counter it with Evasion heroes like Catherine the Great or Napoleon, or simply strip it with a Dispel.
- Bleed: Applied to your highest-HP hero and stacking across multiple Maws. At peak, three Maws bleeding the same target is devastating. Ada Blackjack or Tiger Lily wipe the whole team’s Bleed in one cast.
- Stun: Targets whoever is closest to firing their ability. Rotate your bars smartly and use CC heroes like Hercules or Mozart to interrupt the cast before it lands.
- Pirate Summons: Two squads of four, straight onto your battlefield. AoE dealers like Queen Boudicca or Leonardo da Vinci clean these up quickly.
- Defense Debuff: Strips your tank’s DEF by 25%, and with multiple Maws stacking it, you can hit -57% effective defense. Cleanse it or pre-buff with William Wallace to cancel it out.
The key thing to remember is that you’re selecting your squad for all three waves at once, before the fight begins. That’s why reading the ability preview on screen before you lock in is so important. Know what’s coming, then build for it.
Read the Color – Every Stage Has One
Before you even think about abilities, look at Scylla’s colour. Every stage is assigned one: Red (Fire), Green (Earth), Blue (Water), Yellow (Light) or Purple (Darkness), and all the Maws in that stage share it. The colour cycles as you climb, and it has a massive impact on how much damage you deal and take.

The rule is the same one you already know from the rest of the game: bring heroes whose colour counters the stage colour, and you’ll deal more damage while taking less. The default swing is ±25%, which is genuinely significant. Ignore it at your peril.
The good news is that you don’t need to memorise anything. The colour is displayed right on Scylla herself. Red stage? Bring Blue heroes. Simple as that. This is yet another reason why a diverse roster isn’t optional in this dungeon – it’s essential.
The One Weakness That Never Changes: Lightning Damage
Here’s the thing that ties your entire Scylla Event Dungeon strategy together: no matter what stage you’re on, no matter what colour or wave layout you face, Scylla and every single one of her Maws are permanently weak to Lightning damage. It applies a flat damage multiplier across the board, every time, no exceptions.
Right now, only two heroes in the game deal Lightning damage: Vasco da Gama and Odysseus.

Odysseus’ ability, Verdict of Zeus, calls down a lightning strike for massive burst damage and then ramps up his Attack Speed, so every follow-up hit lands faster. Against a boss permanently vulnerable to Lightning, that snowballing output is exactly what the dungeon demands.
And here’s the part that should get everyone’s attention: Odysseus is completely free. Log in for seven days during the Great Odyssey event and he’s yours, no spending required. He is, without question, the single most important hero to have for this dungeon. If you do nothing else this event, log in daily and grab him.
The Game Tells You Who to Bring
Not sure whether a hero is a good pick for a specific stage? You don’t have to guess. The dungeon uses a visual indicator system on the hero selection screen. Heroes that are strong picks for that particular stage will show a red icon next to their portrait, based on their damage type, ability class, or counter-potential against the Maws you’re about to face.
In practice, strong picks are flagged based on four things:
- Lightning Damage capability: Always a bonus
- Colour advantage: Do they match the counter-colour for this stage?
- Counter-picks: Cleansers for Debuff Maws, Dispellers for Buff Maws
- Role requirements: Does the stage need a Defender or Healer in a specific slot?
When in doubt, lean on those indicators. They are doing a lot of the strategic legwork for you.
The One Relic You Want: Odysseus’ Bow
If you’re serious about pushing deep into this dungeon, there’s one relic that changes the game: Odysseus’ Bow. It increases the Lightning damage of whoever holds it, and gives their basic attacks a 10% chance to trigger an additional Lightning hit on top of that. Both effects scale with relic level, so it keeps getting better as you invest.

Naturally, it’s tailor-made for Odysseus, but it also works brilliantly on any Single Striker class hero throughout the dungeon. You can earn it as the main reward from the Odyssey of the Dark-Wine Sea event, alongside the new rare relic, the Lyre. Prioritise it.
What You’re Actually Fighting For
The deeper you push, the better the loot. Here’s what’s waiting for you:
- Voyager’s Set: Boosts Single Damage and Attack Speed. Best in slot for Odysseus.
- Enchantress’s Set: Improves Defense and shortens Initial Charge so your abilities fire faster. A great fit for Circe.
- Torch of Prometheus: A Legendary Relic you can upgrade further with its Sigils.
- Great Odyssey Antimatter: Portal fuel for pulling more Odyssey heroes.
The Short Version
If you’ve scrolled to the bottom, here’s the Scylla Event Dungeon strategy in a nutshell:
- ✅ Grab Odysseus: Log in 7 days, get him free. Lightning damage wins fights here.
- ✅ Diversify your team: Build a wide roster and keep it upgraded.
- ✅ Match your colours: The ±25% damage swing is too big to ignore.
- ✅ Bring a Cleanser: Bleed, Stun, and Defense Debuffs will stack up fast.
- ✅ Bring a Dispeller: Strip Maw ATK and DEF buffs before they spiral.
- ✅ Read the wave preview: Build your team around all three waves, not just the first.
- ✅ Chase Odysseus’ Bow: It’s your biggest DPS upgrade for the whole dungeon.
Now get out there. Scylla’s been waiting long enough. Join the Great Odyssee in Heroes of History today!
